WHEREAS, Tree Pittsburgh was founded in 2006 in an effort to facilitate a more healthy and vibrant city through the revitalization and maintenance of Pittsburgh’s Urban Forest; and,
WHEREAS, since 2006, Tree Pittsburgh has successfully motivated Pittsburghers to plant and preserve over 29,600 public trees through education and advocacy efforts; and,
WHEREAS, Tree Pittsburgh’s staff and volunteers contribute to the growth of our tree canopy which improves air quality, capturing more than 5,300 tons of atmospheric CO (carbon monoxide) annually and bringing $1.6 million of economic benefit per year; and,
WHEREAS, Tree Pittsburgh focuses on not only growing but also diversifying our tree canopy. Pittsburgh is currently home to over 130 species of trees, which add appeal and distinction to our parks and communities; and,
WHEREAS, volunteers with Tree Pittsburgh genuinely care about the well-being of their communities and are given the chance to make a difference and gain experience in environmental protection; and,
WHEREAS, Tree Pittsburgh has improved not only the city’s tree population but also our appreciation for trees, creating a more environmentally sustainable & conscious city; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 10th anniversary of Tree Pittsburgh and the organization’s staff and volunteers for their vital role in restoring the city’s urban forest, and making Pittsburgh an overall greener, better place to live; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 12, 2016 to be “Tree Pittsburgh Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
