WHEREAS, in 1997, an initiative entitled Clean Slate, began to educate, encourage and entertain drug free lives in Pittsburgh public housing. This drug awareness program helps provide all youth with a fresh start in life; and
WHEREAS, every year, weeklong featured events include a Town Hall Meeting, Adult Forum, Public School Tour, Baseball Clinic, Pep Rally, Celebrity Basketball Game, Book Signing and a Concert; and
WHEREAS, in an effort to reach as many youth as possible, and given that youth are influenced by public personalities, Clean Slate is celebrity driven; and
WHEREAS, the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides for the educational portion of the program and has generated interest in Clean Slate from a number of businesses and foundations, securing substantial funding assistance for Clean Slate 2004; and
WHEREAS, the Clean Slate Program, now entering its sixth year, has educated and made an impact on more than 10,000 youths in the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Clean Slate 2004 will be held from May 19 through May 23, 2004.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh Clean Slate Program for educating and encouraging a drug-free lifestyle for our youth and thanks the many corporate and private sponsors for their funding.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that May 19 through May 23, 2004, be hereby declared "Clean Slate Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
