WHERES, Arsenal Family & Children's Center was founded in Lawrenceville in 1953 by Dr. Benjamin Spock, a University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine faculty member. The center was designed as a training site for pediatric medial students to study normal child development in the context of a stable and highly ethnic neighborhood; and
Whereas, Arsenal became a private, non-profit in 1980 and in 1986, was asked to establish a second site in the City of Clairton. Arsenal operates as a social service agency, which provides a variety of programs and services for children and their families that are designed to meet the needs of the individual communities in the Pittsburgh area; and
Whereas, for fifty years, Arsenal has been committed to promoting and advocating for the healthy development of children and supporting parents in their efforts to nurture their children. Its diverse programs and its partnerships with other community agencies help reach children of all ages and all circumstances; and
WHEREAS, in 2003, Arsenal moved from Lawrenceville to a new center in the Friendship Shadyside section of Pittsburgh to further its mission; and
WHEREAS, on Sunday 19, 2004, Arsenal Family & Children's Center celebrates 50 years of service to families and children.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Arsenal Family and Children's Center and its staff for providing quality programs and services for the healthy development of young children and for helping parents build nurturing relationship between themselves and their children.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the September 19, 2004 be hereby declared "Arsenal Family & Children's Center Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
