WHEREAS, Medical Laboratory Professionals Week was originated in 1975 under the auspices of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, and in subsequent years took on other organizations to serve as cosponsors and campaign supporters. The purpose of the Week is to provide the profession with a unique opportunity to increase public understanding of and appreciation for clinical laboratory personnel; and,
WHEREAS, now in its 43rd year, MLPW is a time of recognition for the approximately 300,000 medical laboratory professionals and the 15,000 board -certified pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care; and,
WHEREAS, the dedicated efforts of laboratory professionals often go unnoticed by the general public, as well as by the very institutions employing their services., and with the public demanding increased health care quality and professional accountability , organizations representing practitioners of the crucial area have a responsibility to ensure that the public is well informed about laboratory competency; and,
WHEREAS, laboratory tests are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease and comprise an estimated 70% of a typical patient medical record. With more than 10 billion laboratory tests performed in the United States each year, new lab professionals will be needed to meet the growing need for competent professionals; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend those dedicated medical laboratory professionals and pathologists for their commitment and devotion to their profession; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 22-28, 2018, to be “MEDICAL LABORATORY PROFESSIONALS WEEK” in the City of Pittsburgh.
