WHEREAS, Roger Adam, born in 1923, spent the first 53 years of his life in France. During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the Engineering Arm of the French Army specializing in the art of mine-sweeping; and,
WHEREAS, soon after the war he became a Metallurgical and Mining Engineer and managed a number of coal mines in the North of France. During that time, he volunteered for and ran the local Red Cross, and was a lifelong blood donor well into his 80s. In 1958, he took a life-changing trip to the United States to tour the Grand Canyon; and,
WHEREAS, while traveling along Route 19 to consult with CONSOL Energy, he was captivated by the beauty of Pennsylvania's rolling Appalachian hills. By 1978, he had moved to Pittsburgh, bought a house he first saw in 1958, married a native Pittsburgher, and begun managing West Virginia coal mines for Elf Aquitaine; and,
WHEREAS, throughout his career as a mining engineer and mine manager, he developed two patents aimed at enhancing miner safety. One was for a vehicle equipped with a hydraulic support system to prevent ceiling collapses, while the other was for a cutting bit with integrated water jets designed to reduce the risk of highly flammable and explosive coal dust in mines; and,
WHEREAS, Roger became a U.S. citizen in 1983 and has called Pittsburgh his home for 49 years. Now residing in Crafton with his daughter, he appreciates the local cuisine at Sarafino's and the abundance of beautiful tree-lined streets. He still enjoys an occasional horseback ride, dining out with friends, and keeping up with the lives of his three children and nine great-grandchildren; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Roger Adam for the work he has done in working with MSHA and OSHA in promoting the health and safety of coal miners, and wish him a happy 102nd Birthday; and,
