WHEREAS, Gloria M. Ernst, better known as “Toots,” of 131 Odette Street in the Fourth District of the City of Pittsburgh, will turn 85 years of age on February 28, 2016, and;
WHEREAS, born in 1931 in Rankin, PA, Mrs. Ernst has been many things to many people; a wife and mother, a grandmother, a mother-in-law, a beloved community member, and a tireless volunteer, just to name a few, and;
WHEREAS, over the course of her lifetime, Mrs. Ernst has worked with special needs individuals at St. Anthony’s and at Baldwin School District, where she served as a matron on school buses that provided transportation for special needs children, and;
WHEREAS, she served in her capacity with Baldwin School District well into her seventies, showing her dedication to serving the community, and;
WHEREAS, in her 80s, Mrs. Ernst has continued to volunteer for such organizations as St. Norbert Church in Pittsburgh, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Operation Troop Appreciation, Meals on Wheels, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Red Hat Society, as well as for individuals in hospice, and;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Ernst’s family has encouraged her spirit of giving, including her late-husband, Kenneth Ernst, who served the City of Pittsburgh as a Pittsburgh Police Officer, and;
WHEREAS, her family also includes a sister, Louise; three children, Kathleen, Nadine, and Paul; six grandchildren, Lindsay, Justin, Chris, Matt, Steven, and Michael; and five great-grandchildren, and;
WHEREAS, all of Mrs. Ernst’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren live locally and greatly enjoy the colorful “Toots,” and;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh thanks Mrs. Ernst, for her many years of service to the community, and;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 28, 2016 to be “Gloria ‘Toots’ Ernst” Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
