Title: WHEREAS, the United States Navy protects and defends America on the world's oceans, around the clock and is ready to always defend America, preserve economic prosperity, and keep the seas open and free; and,

WHEREAS, the United States Navy protects and defends America on the world's oceans, around the clock and is ready to always defend America, preserve economic prosperity, and keep the seas open and free; and,

WHEREAS, the United States Navy is instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of more than $52 billion in annual exports from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, more than 8,000 active and reserve force Sailors currently in the Navy are from Pittsburgh and the surrounding area; and,

WHEREAS, the latest USS Pittsburgh (LPD-31), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, will be the fifth to be named after the Steel City; and,

WHEREAS, the amphibious transport dock, also called a landing platform dock (LPD), are warships that embark, transport and land elements of a landing force for a variety of expeditionary warfare missions; and,

WHEREAS, our vessels have served in our name - the first serving in 1861, an ironclad gunboat used during the American Civil War, the second, an armored cruiser used during World War II, the third, a Baltimore class cruiser that supported the landing at Iwo Jima during World War II, and the fourth, a Los Angeles class submarine used from December 1984 to August 2019; and,

WHEREAS, the U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Thomas J. Anderson, Program Executive Officer for Ships, will be in Pittsburgh from October 20-23, 2024, to promote the naming of the USS Pittsburgh (LPD-31) with corporate, civic, government, education, community service organizations, and veterans of the U.S. Armed Services.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the United States Navy for the opportunity to engage and educate Pittsburghers about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that City Council, Mayor Gainey and the Controller Heisler do hereby declare Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to be "NAVY FLEET DAY"...
