Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the 18th Annual Cancer Survivors Conference will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the Great Hall at Heinz Field at 11:30 a.m. to focus on all aspects of the cancer journey - from the first day of diagnosis to long-term survivorship. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Saturday, May 20, 2006 "Cancer Survivors Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is working to prevent and detect cancer as well as provide information and support for those who are diagnosed; and
 
WHEREAS, out of the 1.2 million people in Allegheny County, around 8,400 will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and over 4,800 of those diagnosed will have cancers of the lung, breast, colorectal and prostate; and  
 
WHEREAS, screening exams can result in the detection of most cancer, including colorectal, and increase the chances of successful treatment; and
 
WHEREAS, the Cancer Survivors Conference is a celebration of life to demonstrate that people do survive cancer.  It is an opportunity for cancer survivors and their families, friends, and caregivers to share in the joy of a victory over cancer; and
 
WHEREAS, Cancer Survivors Day provides hope to those who are still fighting the disease and incorporates an educational portion to inform participants of ways to prevent cancer and the benefits of early detection; and
