Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Langley High School for eighty five years of educating young people and making our country a better place; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Saturday, October 11, 2008 is declared “LANGLEY HIGH SCHOOL DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on Saturday, October 11, 2008 Langley High School is celebrating its 85th Anniversary; and
 
WHEREAS, back on January 1, 1922 ground was broken for a new school to be named after Samuel Pierpont Langley who for twenty-five years ran the Allegheny Observatory; and
 
WHEREAS, in April 1923 the building was ready for occupancy as twenty-five teachers and six hundred students moved into the building and in June of that year twenty one students were the first graduates of the new Langley High School; and
 
WHEREAS, over the years, as the student population increased, two additions were made to the building and in 1973 it was home to twenty-six hundred students not including faculty and staff; and
 
WHEREAS, the 85th Anniversary festivities will include walking tours of the school, a luncheon and dinner dance at Piccolo Mondo Restaurant.
