WHEREAS, the 3rd annual Hearts in the Park Walk will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2006 beginning at 9:00 AM at Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side; and
WHEREAS, the Hearts in the Park Walk supports the fight against heart disease, helping to fund innovative cardiovascular research at the Allegheny Heart Institute; and
WHEREAS, Cardiovascular research at Allegheny General Hospital has resulted in new, less invasive techniques for heart bypass surgery and valve replacements, as well as pioneering mechanical cardiac assist devices; and
WHEREAS, the money raised through the Hearts in the Park walk will enable the Allegheny Heart Institute to provide support for research that could lead to discovery of new treatments and medical devices that will ultimately lead to improved patient care and help heart patients lead more productive lives after surgery; and
WHEREAS, the Hearts in the Park Walk not only takes place in, but also benefits historic Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side, with a portion of the proceeds funding the restoration and rehabilitation of the park according to the Allegheny Commons Master Plan; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James Magovern of Allegheny General Hospital is the Chairman of the Hearts in the Park Walk and Mayor Bob O'Connor and Pittsburgh City Council President Luke Ravenstahl will serve as Honorary Co-Chairmen with Bob Pompeani as the Master of Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, a special one-day expo will be held at Magovern Conference Center on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, providing information promoting a heart-healthy lifestyle and the importance of proper exercise and diet; and
WHEREAS, other sponsors include the Allegheny Heart Institute, Working Hearts, UBS, Allegheny General Hospital, Eat n' Park, Edwards Lifesciences, The Cardiovascular Institute, St. Jude Medical, Pittsburgh National Aviary, and the Children's Museum; and
