Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Gladys Maharam for the indelible impact she has left on library services on Pittsburgh and Allegheny County and joins with her colleagues in honoring Gladys for her 40 years of service to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh at a reception in her honor on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the Carnegie Museum of Art; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, January 17, 2008, to be GLADYS MAHARAM DAY in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Gladys Maharam has been an integral part of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh family for more than 40 years; and,

WHEREAS, Gladys Maharam held a number of positions with the Carnegie Library since receiving her Masters of Library Science in 1967 and currently holds the position of Deputy Director ; and,

WHEREAS, Gladys initiated the Health Information Services for the Popular Library, installed the first customer interactive data base for the Job Information Center to help displaced steel workers and others to identify career opportunities, advocated for teen services, built strong circulating collections and planned successful public programs ; and,

WHEREAS, Gladys provided the CLP with her unique depth of understanding of both the technical services and public service aspects of librarianship and formed the Electronic Information Network of Allegheny County Libraries and was instrumental in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh receiving grants for Internet access; and;

WHEREAS, Gladys has constantly challenged the old way of doing things for faster, more automated and cost effective methods and was instrumental in barcoding the Carnegie Library's system wide circulating collection of books and transferring public and online catalog records into the Library's first automated system; and,

WHEREAS, Gladys was the first Director of the Library Center of Point Park College and Carnegie Library, overseeing the joint management of a public library and an academic library and managed a major capitol project for them until being named Deputy Director of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in 1998; and ,

WHEREAS, Gladys is the current President of the eiNetwork of the independent
Libraries of Allegheny County and has been active with the Commonwealth Libraries of Pennsylvania as well as with the American Library Association, Pennsylvania Library Association, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and Rotary International. ...
