WHEREAS, Black History Month celebrates the achievements of outstanding African Americans who work to improve their communities one such person is Mr. Gil Berry a successful contractor, current founder of the Black Knight Hawks, and a dedicated community member in the city of Pittsburgh for over twenty years; and
WHEREAS, Gil Berry is devoted to promoting minorities in contracting, he became one of the founders of the Black Contractors Association of Pittsburgh, serving as the Vice President of the organization in 1990, eventually serving as the President of the National Association of Minority Contractors in Western Pennsylvania, and authoring the Executive Order for the Advancement of Women and Minority Businesses in 1991. He also served as the Director of the Northeastern US National Association of Minority Contractors in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Gil Berry not only is an acclaimed contractor for the City of Pittsburgh, he also contributes tirelessly to improve the city at large. He has recently established the Pittsburgh Knight Hawks Association, an inner city hockey organization dedicated to Pittsburgh youth. This initiative will bring diversity to the sport of hockey in ways we have never seen before. Promoting hockey to all youth in all age groups showing us there is a place for all within this sport; and
WHEREAS, The Knight Hawks Association is the first hockey organization
in the City of Pittsburgh to give African American youth the opportunity to learn the sport of hockey and participate in hockey games with their peers.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Mr. Gil Berry for his exceptional accomplishments as an outstanding African American contractor, his commitment to our youth through the Pittsburgh Knight Hawks, and his unwavering dedication to the entire Pittsburgh community.
