Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Stanley R. Gumberg for his commitment to education and community and congratulates him on receipt of the Tree of Life Award; and that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares October 22, 2003, as "Stanley R. Gumberg Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Stanley R. Gumberg is a life long resident of the City of Pittsburgh having earned his bachelor of science degree from Duquesne University in 1950 and having received an honorary doctorate of business degree from Duquesne University's A. J. Palumbo School of Business in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gumberg is Chairman of the Board of J.J. Gumberg Co., a nationally ranked real estate investment and development company headquartered in the City of Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, for more than 75 years, J.J. Gumberg Co. has remained a premier real estate investment and property development company, investing in a variety of real estate sectors, including industrial, commercial, high-rise residential and retail. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, J.J. Gumberg Co. moved aggressively into the shopping center industry, attracting the nation's most outstanding retailers. Today, J.J. Gumberg Co. is a fully integrated company that focuses on the acquisition and development of investment-grade real estate within the retail and commercial sectors; and

WHEREAS, one of Mr. Gumberg's top priorities is education. He is Trustee of the Extra Mile Education Foundation, an organization founded by Bishop Donald Wuerl to aid inner-city grade schools, and also serves as Emeritus Trustee and Executive Committee Member of Carnegie Mellon University, Emeritus Trustee of Seton Hill College, and Trustee and Executive Committee Member of Duquesne University; and

WHEREAS, in celebration and in appreciation for his work, accomplishments and commitment to education, Stanley R. Gumberg will receive the Jewish National Fund's highest honor, the Tree of Life Award, at a testimonial dinner on October 22, 2003, at the Omni William Penn Hotel.
