WHEREAS, Pittsburgh United is an organization working to advance social and economic justice for working families by ensuring economic development projects have a positive impact on the communities where they are located; and
WHEREAS, the members of Pittsburgh United's board include SEIU 32BJ, UFCW Local 23, Sierra Club, Mon Valley Unemployed Committee, Hill District Consensus Group, Pittsburgh Branch NAACP, Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network, Workers United and Clean Water Action; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh United supports government transparency and responsible development when taxpayer dollars are used, fair economic practices and environmental protections; and
WHERAS, Pittsburgh United recognizes that clean air and water are essential to building healthy communities and that sustainable green building practices create higher-paying jobs during new construction projects and retrofitting of older buildings; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh United is working to protect workers and residents from the negative effects of diesel emissions on job sites by supporting the use of best available diesel control technology for publicly funded development; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh United supports the use of higher standards for the storm water management plans of publicly funded development to reduce the costly and negative impact of runoff.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, in honor of Earth Day, thanks Pittsburgh United for making environmental impact a priority in economic development and for supporting practices and policies that will improve the air and water in the Pittsburgh region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares April 22, 2010, "Pittsburgh United Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
