Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does herby recognize and commend Mrs. Madelyn Moorer Hairston Giddens for her timeless accomplishments and service to her community particularly in the field of education. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh herby does declare September 12, 2006 "Madelyn Moore Hairston Giddens Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, Mrs. Madelyn Moorer Hairston Giddens born on this day, September 12,1916, raised in the McKeesport area of the city, and a former employee of the Pittsburgh Public School Board now retired and enjoying her leisure in the Homewood Brushton area; and

Whereas, Mrs. Giddens was one of the only two African-American women to complete the McKeesport Training School for Teachers, and later served as the first African -American woman Vice-Principal of Herron Hill Jr. High School, currently Margaret Millions Middle School, until her retirement in 1982; and

Whereas, with limited materials, Mrs. Giddens established the first lending library, teaching the techniques of supplementary book use, also leadership skills needed in the educational process to young African-American teachers; and

Whereas, during her professional career, Mrs. Giddens enjoyed being the first African-American woman to serve in various professional positions such as Chairwoman of the Keystone Reading Council ,the PA State Conference for Women in Administration, and president of both the Gerald A. Yoakum Reading Society as well as the Western PA Campfire Board of Directors Greater Pittsburgh Council; and

Whereas, Ms. Giddens continues to be a faithful member of the Saint James A.M. E. Church, where her involvement includes her participation on the Trustee Board, the Women's Usher Board and the Pro-To club. She is also recognized for her fifty plus years of service to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, where she's been a Regional Director and served on the international Committee.
