Title: WHEREAS, the resurgence of the roller derby is a revival of the spectator sport originally created by Leo Seltzer in 1935 to compete with marathon dances which saw it's greatest popularity in the 1950's; and WHEREAS, The Steel City Derby Demons formed in 2006 as proud members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association to represent Pittsburgh in this organization which consists of women owned and operated teams; and WHEREAS, The Steel City Derby Demons have been involved in charity work for local animal shelters, fund raising for WQED and helping to add a library at The Women's Shelter & Center in Pittsburgh: and WHEREAS, in the twenty first century, when everything old is new again, including roller derby, these aggressive all-girl skaters jam the pack to restore the sport to it's original hard hitting glory; and WHEREAS, The Steel City Derby Demons which consists of four teams, are one of the over one hundred U.S. leagues formed in recent years as well as leagues created ...

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend The Steel City Derby Demons efforts to provide entertaining events and promote charitable giving:
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, March 14th, 2007 as "Steel City Derby Demons" in the City of Pittsburgh.
