• Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates all the members of the 2006 St. Bede's Future City Competition team; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Tuesday, April 25, 2006 as "St. Bede's Future City Competition Team Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the National Engineers Week Future City Competition was created to provide a fun and educational engineering program for seventh- and eighth-grade students that combines an engineering challenge with creativity and vision for communities of the future; and

WHEREAS, the Future City Competition requires the students to contemplate issues such as public transit, communication, power generation, residential opportunities, pollution, traffic, and infrastructure; and

WHEREAS, the competition teaches students problem-solving, teamwork, research and presentation skills, computer proficiency, and practical math and science applications; and

WHEREAS, the St. Bede's School team, consisting of 8^th graders Luke Belaechak, Emily Ellis, Louis Lamanna, Richard Maher, Catherine Stephenson, and Catharine Youngs, and 7^th graders Mara Flanagan, Kathleen Hospodar, David Jimenez, H.D. Manoli, and Antonio Watkins, teacher Elizabeth Killmeyer, parent Sheila Kelly, and mentor, local engineer Paul Lovejoy, won first place in the Pittsburgh Regional Future City Competition; and

WHEREAS, the team went on to represent the region at the national competition in Washington DC, placing 13^th in the country and winning the awards for Best Essay and Most Healthy Community.
