Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh is honored to support politically-minded men and women from all Pittsburgh institutions of higher education as well as the efforts the institutions have taken to connect the students to the city in which they live. AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September Student Civic Engagement Month in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, university student governments represent student needs and concerns to governing officials on a campus, local, state, and federal level; and,
WHEREAS, throughout the past year student governments, such as the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) and the Undergraduate Student Government Board (SGB) of the University of Pittsburgh, have become very important outlets for civic-minded students; and,
WHEREAS the newly formed Pittsburgh Student Government Council (PSGC) will represent the common needs and concerns of Pittsburgh students to all persons and groups which act to service or govern the student body; and,
WHEREAS, the PSGC will act as a platform by which elected student leaders from all Pittsburgh post-secondary schools may unite to discuss issues and proper action to uphold the rights, vitality, and well being of every student; and,
WHEREAS, the PSGC will also serve as a channel through which students may collaborate on events and merge common efforts to effectively engage students in civic activity that will not only benefit the City of Pittsburgh but society as a whole; and,
WHEREAS, members of the PSGC provide students with a multitude of opportunities and monetary support including grants for attending and presenting at conferences, free legal services, supplemental funds for student organizations, and social and networking events; and,
WHEREAS, the Student Civic Engagement Campaign sponsored by the PSGC will utilize the entirety of the University community to assist in the first time registration and the re-registration of as many students as possible before the October 4th, 2010 voter registration deadline and encourage these registered students to vote in the PA General Election.
