Body
Whereas, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we hereby recognize the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), the world's oldest and largest clinical breast cancer research group.

Whereas, the organization, established in 1958 and located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the first to establish that lumpectomy plus radiation therapy was equally effective as radical mastectomy and demonstrate that adjuvant therapy (treatment in addition to surgery) increases survival rate.

Whereas, the NSABP has led the way in developing innovative studies for the prevention of invasive breast cancer in women at increased risk for developing the disease.

Whereas, the NSABP will celebrate the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art pathology laboratory on October 30, 2006, on Pittsburgh's North Side.  The new laboratory is the repository for the largest centralized breast and colorectal tumor tissue bank in the nation, heralded by the National Cancer Institute as a "national treasure".

Whereas, the NSABP works cooperatively with other investigators in the international scientific community, sharing its tissue bank specimens with qualified researchers in academia and in industry.  Among its achievements is the contribution to gene-based research designed to lead to the development of individualized therapies.
