Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the 5th grade class of Pittsburgh Vann for successfully completing the school's curriculum, and does hereby wish each student success in their future endeavors as lead by the example set forth by Robert Lee Vann.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Vann K-5, a neighborhood school located in the Hill District community that has provided a highly structured and disciplined setting for students, is scheduled to close its doors on June 30th; and,
 
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Vann got its namesake from Robert Lee Vann, an African American lawyer, diplomat, crusader and political statesman who rose from the obscurity of a backwoods farm in North Carolina to go on and receive a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1909, begin his own law practice in 1910, and become nominated by President Roosevelt as Special Assistant Attorney-General; and,
 
WHEREAS, Robert Lee Vann was heavily involved in the newspaper business, acting as one of the co-founders of the Pittsburgh Courier where he became its editor and remained as such until his death in 1940, exemplifying a renaissance spirit and drive embodied in the philosophy of Pittsburgh Vann; and,
 
WHEREAS, the 2010 5th grade class of Pittsburgh Vann will go on to represent its last promoted class, carrying on the school's pioneering values as symbolized in the life of Robert Lee Vann;
