WHEREAS, sexual assault remains a significant public health and human rights issue that affects individuals of all genders, ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds - more than half of all women and nearly one third of all men in America have experienced sexual violence; and,

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) has been steadfast in its mission to support survivors, advocate for change, and raise awareness about the pervasive issue of sexual assault; and,
WHEREAS, PAAR has tirelessly provided essential services such as counseling, advocacy, and education to survivors of sexual assault, empowering them on their journey toward healing and justice; and,
WHEREAS, during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the importance of raising awareness about sexual violence, challenging harmful attitudes and behaviors while holding offenders to account, and promoting a culture of consent, respect, and support; and,
WHEREAS, PAAR plays a crucial role in fostering dialogue, education, and community engagement to prevent sexual violence and support survivors in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County; and,
WHEREAS, together, we declare sexual violence has no place in Pittsburgh, and re-commit to bringing an end to a culture that has allowed sexual assault to occur for far too long.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of April 2024 to be "Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.
