WHEREAS, the American Chemical Society, founded in 1876, is the world's largest scientific society with a mission that is dynamic and visionary, committed to improving people's lives through the transforming power of chemistry by advancing the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of the Earth and its people; and,
WHEREAS, the American Chemical Society has 161,000 members, is the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professional around the globe and is one of the world's leading sources of authoritative scientific information; and,
WHEREAS, the American Chemical Society publishes numerous scientific journals and databases, convenes major research conferences, awards more than $22 million every year in grants for basic research and provides educational, science policy and career programs in chemistry; and,
WHEREAS; ACS has 187 local sections in the United States and has an international membership of 24,000 plus; and,
WHEREAS, the ACS Central Regional Meeting will be held in Pittsburgh on October 29-November 1, 2014 and will feature exhibitors, presentations, plenary lectures, workshops, seminars, awards, social events, and a symposium.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the American Chemical Society for 138 years of a visionary commitment to improving lives and congratulates ACS for holding its Central Regional Meeting in Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, October 29 , 2014, to be "AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY CENTRAL REGION DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.
