Whereas, Mr. Harvey Adams, Jr., former Pittsburgh Police sergeant and retired Director of the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh Police served as president of the Pittsburgh Branch of NAACP for 16 years and aggressively fought police brutality and discrimination in corporate and public employment.; and
Whereas, Mr. Adams served his country honorably and admirably as an U.S. Army Infantry Sergeant in the Korean War receiving several battle stars for combat. He has also received an appointment to the Army's Officer Candidate School but declined because of segregation; and
Whereas, Mr. Adams returned to Pittsburgh and served 21 years as an officer of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, attaining the rank of Sergeant and then chose to take on an even more noble task, fighting for civil rights; and
Whereas, as President of the NAACP's Pittsburgh Chapter, he negotiated fair share agreements for minority hiring everywhere from Duquesne Light to PNC Bank and fought to get both women and minorities hired by the City's Police Department; and
Whereas, Mr. Adams is the founding father and adviser of the Guardians of Pittsburgh, an organization created to increase African-American presence in setting Department Policy and whose work resulted in the hiring of over 100 African-American and white female officers to the force.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends Mr. Harvey Adams, Jr. for his years of dedicated service to minorities in the City of Pittsburgh and across the country.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares Tuesday February 28, 2006 "Harvey Adams Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
