WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children (PAEYC), in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) works to ensure that children have the support and educational opportunities they need to grow and develop in healthy ways, particularly during the first five years of life; and
WHEREAS, PAEYC works to ensure every child in Pittsburgh will have access to a high quality early learning opportunity, particularly those who are at risk of school failure, in order to build a future workforce capable of competing in a global economy; and
WHEREAS, PAEYC is supporting professional development opportunities for those who work with young children and families from Birth to Grade 3, with a focus on quality Pre-Kindergarten services, in order to improve each child's chance for success in school; and
WHEREAS, public policies that support quality early learning for all young children result in increased educational attainment levels that are crucial to young children becoming productive contributing adults and to the future competitiveness of our nation; and
WHEREAS, PAEYC encourages active lifestyles for young children, filled with opportunities to play, so they can learn valuable social skills and grow into healthy, productive adults; and
WHEREAS, parents at home understand the needs of their young children and provide the encouragement and support their children need so they can gain a strong sense of love and caring.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim April 2014 as the Month of the Young Child; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares its support for continued public investments in quality early childhood education in Pennsylvania.
