WHEREAS, the Morning Star Baptist Church in collaboration with The Mission Continues and Grounded Strategies will engage in a volunteer led Memorial Clean Up & Build Day to revitalize the corner yard on Second Ave at Renova Street and Glenwood Avenue and to build pantry space inside the Morning Star Baptist Church; and,
WHEREAS, project day will be Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 10am to 4pm and centered around honoring the contributions of two lifelong Hazelwood and Glenwood residents, Minister Rena Fuller and George Thomas; and,
WHEREAS, both Rena and George were passionate about bridging the divides of age, ability, and belief to build a tighter and more connected neighborhood and community; and,
WHEREAS, Rena Fuller was a licensed minister at Morning Star Baptist Church in Glenwood. Rena led the section of Sunday service known as Children's Hour where the children learned valuable life lessons regarding the Bible; and,
WHEREAS, she was also a community-based educator, Child, Youth, & Family advocate, mentor, founding member of Jada House International, Hazelwood Initiative board member, and mother; and,
WHEREAS, George Thomas was a community organizer and active member of the Hazelwood community. George was an associate with Jackson/Clark Partners where he promoted resident led outreach for many projects across the city and helped collect neighborhood data through the community census; and,
WHEREAS, he was also a United States Army veteran, mentor, community leader, Hazelwood Initiative board member, and father; and,
WHEREAS, the Memorial Clean Up & Build Day on May 18th will celebrate the lives of Rena and George and further cement the impact that both residents had on the community; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the service of Minister Rena Fuller and George Thomas to the greater Hazelwood community; and,
