WHEREAS most recently, Downtown, Pittsburgh has become a site for a variety of both commercial and residential development projects that will succeed in transforming the city in a number of positive and lasting ways; and
WHEREAS in order for the current Downtown development projects to experience true success, such undertakings must honor the traditions and character of such neighborhoods in their entirety, thereby including all segments of the population and excluding no one from the economic and social benefits of development; and
WHEREAS while the vast majority of Downtown building owners adhere to standards that foster the creation of economic and social justice for all people, there continue to be other owners who behave in a manner that is adverse to the interests of workers, labor, the larger community of Downtown businesses, and the general public interest; and
WHEREAS the Service Employees International Union's national, "Justice for Janitors" Campaign has succeeded in working with janitors, cleaning contractors, building owners, and the broader political, faith-based, and business communities in order to improve the living standards of janitors and other service workers, thereby promoting investment in economic development that benefits all sectors of society; and
WHEREAS SEIU as it operates within the City of Pittsburgh will host its own "Justice for Janitors" Day to be held on Friday, June 30th; and
WHEREAS on June 30th, 2006, SEIU will also sponsor its Justice Block Party - A Celebration of Fair Development for Downtown Pittsburgh - with proceeds benefiting Father Regis Ryan's "Focus On Renewal Center in McKees Rocks," an organization that seeks to provide a valuable service by supplying an important safety net to those people who have been left behind in our changing economy.
