WHEREAS, since 1999, HCEF has been dedicated to the education of children experiencing homelessness through learning environments in homeless housing facilities, and grants to homeless housing providers to further enrich the lives of children experiencing homelessness by providing educational programs, materials and community excursions; and,
WHEREAS, during the 2013/14 school year, $27,461 in Mini-Grants were awarded to 16 agencies impacting 650 children and 200 parents and $7,762 in Field Trip Grants were awarded impacting 350 children and 150 parents totaling 52 field trips and over 2,500 backpacks were given to children experiencing homelessness; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, HCEF provides afterschool and summer programs led by highly qualified teachers and volunteers who work with students on homework, literacy and creative projects, allowing students to recognize their potential and gain self-confidence; and,
WHEREAS, the Homeless Children's Education Fund relies solely on community and business support with the largest fundraiser being their annual Champions for Children Gala held on Monday, March 2, 2015 at the Rivers Club from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM with Event Chairs Ray and Kathy Buehler and honored guests Andy and Cindy Russell; and,
WHEREAS, the Champions for Children award, presented to community leaders Scott and Sue Lammie who have supported HCEF and it mission and the Linda A. Dickerson Award presented to Judge Dwayne Woodruff , for working day to day to support the challenges faced by children experiencing homelessness; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Homeless Children's Education Fund, its staff, its Board of Trustees and volunteers for their dedication and service to the children experiencing homelessness in our community; and,
