Whereas, on May 24th, 2004, the national "Benchmarks for Success" study, an objective statistical analysis of publicly available data from more than 6,000 acute care general hospitals across the United States, did for the third straight year name West Penn Hospital to the list of 100 Top Hospitals; and
Whereas, the hospital was not only named to this prestigious list, but did so as a major teaching hospital, one of just 16 such institutions to do so. This is a special accomplishment because it illustrates that West Penn Hospital provides immediate lifesaving medical services and is also constantly teaching and training new generations of doctors; and
Whereas, West Penn has received numerous awards and recognitions honoring the hospital's outstanding treatment of life threatening disease and injury. These include its designation as a Center of Excellence by the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation, the Burn Trauma Center's receipt of verification of honors from the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association, and the bone marrow transplant program's nationally recognition as one of the best in the world; and
Whereas, every year Western Pennsylvania Hospital admits approximately 19,000 patients, logs over 25,000 emergency visits, and performs nearly 18,000 surgical procedures.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh expresses its deep appreciation and thanks for the exemplary medical services that the Western Pennsylvania Hospital provides to the area and congratulates this institution for its well deserved recognition.
