Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby acknowledge and applaud the countless contributions and accomplishments of Hispanic Americans in the City of Pittsburgh and their efforts in preserving their culture for future generations to come. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that October 2, 2004 be hereby declared "Latin American Cultural Union Day" in the City of Pittsburgh. SPONSORED BY COUNCIL PRESIDENT GENE RICCIARDI

WHEREAS, America's diversity is a great strength in our nation.  Hispanic Americans have enriched our County and our City through contributions in many professions and fields including education, law, government, business, science, sports and the arts; and
 
WHEREAS, in wanting to recognize the accomplishments of Hispanic-American citizens, our Government created National Hispanic Heritage Week in September 1968.  It then became National Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988, which is celebrated and observed September 15th through October 15th each year; and
 
WHEREAS, the Latin American Cultural Union was founded in 1986.  This organization provides our Hispanic families residing in the City of Pittsburgh a way to preserve and enrich the cultural identity of its members, and cultivate and convey Latin American cultural and artistic expression, such as music, dance, visual arts, crafts, and literature to the Pittsburgh community, while celebrating their culture; and
 
WHEREAS, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Latin American Cultural Union of the Pittsburgh Community will celebrate the 4th Annual Gala at the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center Hotel on October 2, 2004.
