Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 16, 2008 as Bike to Work Day, in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Bike Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization, with over 700 members, dedicated to increasing awareness of bicycling and the safety of bicyclists in the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Bike Pittsburgh strives to promote the bicycle as a desirable, cost-effective, healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transportation and educates motorists and bicyclists on road safety; and
WHEREAS, according to the 2006 Census' American Community Survey, Pittsburgh ranked 18th in the nation out of the 60 most populated cities in percentage of people who bicycle to work; and
WHEREAS, the greatest potential for increased bicycle usage is in our major urban areas where 40 percent of all trips are 2 miles or less and 28 percent are less than one mile; and
WHEREAS, Bike to Work Day is a national event in the United States and will be observed in the City of Pittsburgh on May 16, 2008 to promote bicycling as a pollution-free and economical form of transportation to the workplace and to celebrate those who commute by bike throughout the year;
