WHEREAS, Alina Sheykhet was born in Ivanovo, Russia, to Yan and Elly Sheykhet. At the age of three, she and her family immigrated to the United States. Alina was a gifted young woman with a deep love for singing, dancing, and acting, captivating audiences with her grace, talent, and heartfelt performances; and,
WHEREAS, Alina graduated from Montour High School in 2015 and enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh with the goal of becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Her decision was inspired by a serious knee injury that ended her pursuit of a professional dance career, and she aspired to help others overcome physical setbacks that threatened their dreams; and,
WHEREAS, on October 8, 2017, Alina's life was tragically taken by her ex-boyfriend in her off-campus apartment. In the wake of this unimaginable loss, her family and loved ones committed themselves to creating lasting change in her honor; and,
WHEREAS, Elly and Yan Sheykhet, determined to preserve their daughter's legacy, established Alina's Light, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence, educating communities, and offering emotional and social support to those affected; and,
WHEREAS, through Alina's Light, they also work to prevent future tragedies by sponsoring life-saving SOS devices and advocating for legislative reform, including Alina's Law (Senate Bill 123, House Bill 104) aimed at enhancing protections for victims of domestic violence; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the work of Alina's Light in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the work of Alina's Light in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and applauds the unwavering dedication of her family and supporters in transforming personal tragedy into a powerful movement for change; and,
