WHEREAS, Ruth Garfinkel has been the executive Director of the National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section, for 11 of her 15 years with the organization; and,
WHEREAS, The National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section is an organization inspired by Jewish values that work through a program of research, education, advocacy and community service to improve the quality of life for women, children and families, and strives to ensure individual rights and freedoms for all; and,
WHEREAS, projects have included Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure, The Children's Playroom's in the Courts, the Silent Witness Initiative a domestic violence project, Life's Work, Head Start, and Pic-A-Bag duffle bags for foster and homeless children; and,
WHEREAS, Ruth Garfinkel is the 14th recipient in 111 years of the of the prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award which is given to an individual who has helped change and expand the role of other women in vital areas of the community, and whose leadership has improved the quality of life for people of all ages and backgrounds and has motivated others to fight for change and has resulted in progress and enlightenment in the community.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Ruth Garfinkel for her service to the community and congratulates her for receiving the Hannah G. Solomon Award; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday September 22, 2004 to be "Ruth Garfinkel Day" here in the City of Pittsburgh.
