WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Carnegie Mellon University will celebrate their 10th Anniversary on December 5, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Sigma Phi Epsilon, founded in 1901 on the principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love, is currently the nation's largest fraternity with over 13,500 undergraduate members on more than 260 campuses; and
WHEREAS, Sigma Phi Epsilon is the first fraternity in the nation to establish an education foundation, establish a national housing foundation, and eliminate membership restrictions based on race or creed; and
WHEREAS, the Carnegie Mellon chapter has received numerous awards for Outstanding Fraternity on Campus, Outstanding Greek Male, Outstanding Greek Varsity Athlete, and Greek Week Champions; and
WHEREAS, over the past four years, the chapter has averaged a GPA of over 3.3, well above campus and national averages; and
WHEREAS, the chapter has excelled in Carnegie Mellon student activities, winning Greek Sing twice, Booth five times, and Mr. Fraternity three times; and
WHEREAS, the chapter dedicates many hours each semester to community service, volunteering at The Woodlands Foundation and raising money for YouthAIDS.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the Pennsylvania Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon for their commitment and service to Carnegie Mellon University and the Pittsburgh region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Friday, December 5, 2008, "Sigma Phi Epsilon Pennsylvania Theta Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
