WHEREAS, the year 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the YMR Club of Allegheny, first established in 1875 in Pittsburgh’s Northside, formerly known as Allegheny City; and,
WHEREAS, the YMR Club was originally chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as the Young Men’s Republican Club to support literacy and civic engagement through a reading room and library, both of which were housed in the club’s basement; and,
WHEREAS, for 150 years, the YMR Club has fostered fellowship, civic awareness, and social connection under the guidance of its board of directors, and today maintains a membership of approximately 350 individuals; and,
WHEREAS, although its original name reflects its 19th-century origins, the YMR Club has deliberately modernized-shedding its partisan identity and welcoming individuals of all backgrounds, ideologies, and beliefs in accordance with its inclusive mission; and,
WHEREAS, today’s YMR Club, located at 631 Suismon Street, is recognized as the oldest private members’ club in Pittsburgh and continues to serve as a vibrant center for social and cultural activity; and,
WHEREAS, reflecting its transformation into a modern gathering place, the Club now hosts members-only events such as pool tournaments, jukebox nights, Steelers game day parties, Kentucky Derby celebrations, and live music performances-adding vibrancy to the Northside’s social scene-and has also served as an official polling location in past years; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and celebrate the YMR Club for 150 years of continuous service, civic engagement, and community building; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares June 20, 2025, as “YMR Club Day” in honor of this historic milestone and the Club’s enduring contributions to civic life, social connection, and cultural enrichment in the Northside.
