WHEREAS, over two million people in the United States live with aphasia, a language disorder often caused by stroke or brain injury that affects speaking, reading, writing, comprehension and memory, but not intelligence; and,
WHEREAS, aphasia can profoundly impact daily life, impacting relationships, work, independence, and mental health, with many individuals facing social isolation and depression due to communication challenges and a shortage of mental health providers; and,
WHEREAS, Aphasia Awareness Day seeks to increase understanding and reduce stereotypes and negative assumptions about people living with aphasia; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Aphasia Community group provides vital support and community to those affected by aphasia, promoting engagement in meaningful activities, fostering relationships, and advocating for inclusive care and communication practices; and,
WHEREAS, people with aphasia can continue to learn, grow, and achieve great things when provided appropriate support, including speech-language therapy and participation in community-based groups; and,
WHEREAS, it is essential that we all practice patience and kindness when communicating with individuals with aphasia: speaking at a natural pace, listening actively, and giving them the time they need to respond;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Pittsburgh Aphasia Community Group for its outstanding efforts in raising awareness and supporting individuals with aphasia; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 24, 2025, to be “APHASIA AWARENESS DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
