Title
WHEREAS, on May 1, 2007, Chatham College is holding a special event to announce the renaming of the school as Chatham University; and
WHEREAS, this historic women's college was founded in 1869, and played a significant role in the Women's Suffrage and Civil Rights movements; and
WHEREAS, Chatham University is currently home to over 1,700 students from around the world, and will encompass three distinctive schools, namely Chatham College for Women, the College for Graduate Studies, and the College for Continuing and Professional Studies; and
WHEREAS, Chatham has offered graduate degrees to women and men since 1994, and the school launched an online degree program in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Esther L. Barazzone, Ph.D., was named President of Chatham College in 1992, and is the longest-tenured University President in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, a leader of the modern environmental movement, Rachel Carson is amongst Chatham's most esteemed alumni, and May 27th marks her 100th birthday; and
WHEREAS, Chatham's graduate students work in applied and liberal professions including art and architecture, business, psychology, film and digital media, health sciences, nursing, teaching and writing; and
WHEREAS, Chatham University is now one of six universities in Pittsburgh.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Chatham University, and thanks the school for its dedication to higher education; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares May 1, 2007, "Chatham University Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
