WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) 6-12 is a magnet school located in Pittsburgh's Downtown Cultural District that promotes a disciplined academic program, enabling all students in grades 6-12 to study the arts for their intrinsic, aesthetic, historical and cultural values; and
WHEREAS, President Barack Obama set a goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020 and created the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge; and
WHEREAS, President Obama invited the nation's public high schools to submit applications that demonstrate their commitment to preparing students for college and subsequent careers; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of applications were received and were judged based on the schools' performance, essay questions and supplemental data; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 was selected as one of six national finalists; and
WHEREAS, each of the finalists created a three-minute video that explains how the school uniquely prepares its students for college; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Pittsburgh City Council congratulates CAPA on its meritorious achievement of being selected as a finalist in President Obama's Race to the Top Commencement Challenge.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 26, 2011, Pittsburgh CAPA Commencement Challenge Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
