WHEREAS, Kaffeehaus is located at 1022 Chestnut Street in Pittsburgh’s East Deutschtown neighborhood. Owners Tammy Waraks and her son, Kyle Waraks, opened their doors on June 10, 2017, with hopes of adding to their community’s vibrancy; and,
WHEREAS, Tammy and Kyle never planned to open a coffee shop but did not hesitate to partner up when the opportunity presented itself. Tammy runs the office end of her husband’s construction company, Mr. Renovation. Kyle was working for his father’s construction company and attending college. Tammy and Kyle wanted to support the ongoing development in the area that their husband and father, Chris Waraks, started in 2015; and,
WHEREAS, Tammy and Kyle named their coffee shop Kaffeehaus to keep with the old German heritage of the community; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of Kaffeehaus is to build the community by providing a place to meet fellow neighbors. Kaffeehaus provides a free library where neighbors can take books or add more for others. Neighbors can also post notices or information about events on the communication board; and,
WHEREAS, Tammy and Kyle plan to coordinate evening openings with neighboring businesses to support their events. They also plan to work with local schools to give young artists experience with art openings as part of their rotating artwork exhibit. Kaffeehaus will also host the “Coffee with a Cop” program and engage the community in any way they can; and,
WHEREAS, Tammy and Kyle are committed to fostering a sense of community and encouraging relationships between neighbors. Their dedication to the East Deutschtown neighborhood’s heritage and residents provide a vibrant and necessary element of the neighborhood; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, August 10, 2017, to be “Kaffeehaus Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
