WHEREAS, the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) works to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of Chinese Americans in the United States that promote civic goals and preserve cultural ties; and
WHEREAS, since the 1800's, the presence of a local Chinese community has been an asset to the city and its social and cultural development; and
WHEREAS, members of the local Chinese community have made numerous contributions in the fields of business, education, research, arts, medicine, engineering, social services and science; and
WHEREAS, the lunar new year is the central cultural event in the world-wide Chinese community; and
WHEREAS, the Chinese community in the city and neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, and Allegheny County, gather to celebrate the New Year; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Chinese Restaurant Association highlights the culinary contributions of Asian societies at this annual banquet with a 12-Course Mandarin Style Dinner; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Syria Shriners Center in Cheswick, PA, the talent, families and professionals of the Chinese community gathered together at a festive event, to showcase what is best about their culture and accomplishments as well as other Asian societies in celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year 4711, the Year of the Snake;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the Organization of Chinese Americans for its dedicated efforts in embracing the hopes and aspirations of Asian Americans, and does hereby declare Saturday, February 23, 2013 to be "OCA Year of the Snake Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
