Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Pittsburgh City Council commends The Seven Project, Inc. for its humanitarian initiatives in the African-American community and throughout the city in prevention of HIV/AIDS and outreach for those who have contracted HIV/AIDS; thereby, in the words of your motto, we encourage Pittsburghers to: "Take A Stand. Make A Difference."

Whereas, after 11 years, The Seven Project, Inc. (Seven) is becoming well known since its inception in 1993 for the work it is doing throughout the city in HIV/AIDS outreach and primary and secondary prevention; and

Whereas, Seven was conceived following the AIDS-related death of the founder's brother, James Dixon, who after being shot, received blood transfusions resulting in his contracting the AIDS virus; and

Whereas, under the direction of founding executive director, Grace Dixon-Kizzie, Seven received its 501(c) (3) nonprofit status in December of 1999, has grown from an in-home supportive services to include mental health counseling, case management, community outreach in six high-risk communities, two weekly self-help support groups, monthly harm reduction workshops for men, women and multiple family and multiple generation groupings; and

Whereas, Seven, the only African American 501(c)(3) founded AIDS service organization in the region has been instrumental in facilitating and recruiting minorities for the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health research efforts for HIV prevention needs;

Whereas, on March 26, 2005 Seven and Starbucks sponsored "Stay Negative", a prevention campaign, reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette [Sunday, March 27, 2005, p. B-4] as successful, which will be followed by Seven's annual Unity Weekend during the first weekend in August, which will include, Friday through Sunday: Community Outreach Canvassing; All Night "Bowling for Prevention;" Free Community Family Picnic, and culminate with the Miss Seven Pageant and The James E. Dixon Humanitarian Awards Night.
