Title: Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Chatham College for its efforts increase greater global understanding and for having Ambassador Ronen Sen as featured guest at the Opening Convocation. Be it further resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares Wednesday, August 31, 2005 "Global Focus on India Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, in 1995, Chatham College established the Global Focus Program, a program which concentrates on one region of the world each year to enable the college community to engage in a comprehensive study of that region through coursework, class assignments, campus events, community activities, co-curricular programs and service learning projects; and

Whereas, for the 2005-2006 Global Focus Year the region of concentration is India. Chatham College will explore the diverse historical, political and cultural foundations of India with courses ranging from art to business and environmental studies integrating topics related to India. Lectures and activities have been designed to give students a balanced perspective on both the ancient and modern India as well as introduce them to fundamental components that comprise the fabric of India; and

Whereas, in conjunction with the 2005-2006 Global Focus Year of India, His Excellency Ronen Sen, Ambassador of India to the United States and his wife, Kalpana will attend Chatham's Opening Convocation on Wednesday, August 31 at 4:30 p.m.; and

Whereas, His Excellency Ambassador Ronen Sen has served in numerous positions with the Indian Government including Joint Secretary in the Ministry of xternal Affairs (July, 1984 to December, 1985), Joint Secretary to the Prime Minister (January, 1986 to July, 1991), Ambassador to Mexico (September, 1991 to August, 1992), Ambassador to the Russian Federation (October, 1992 to October, 1998), Ambassador to Germany (October, 1998 to May, 2002), High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (May, 2002 to April, 2004) and assumed the position of Ambassador of India to the United States of America in August, 2004; and

Whereas, Chatham College will launch the celebration of the Year of India by presenting Ambassador Ronen Sen with an honorary doctorate during the Opening Convocation.
