WHEREAS, Volunteers who have stepped out of their familiar environments to meet needs not otherwise met through their service are a fundamental part of the community. Nabhi Christian Ministries, whose mission is to enhance impoverished communities by creating healthy environments that mentor, train and develop citizens of all ages recognizes the work and sacrifices of Clifford "Sly Jock" Charlton with their Legendary Lifetime Achievement Award; and,
WHEREAS, finding rap music on Pittsburgh radio stations meant finding a signal from the few, low watt, stations that occasionally played the new music form. At the same time, Clifford Charlton was developing his skills with the turntables on the streets, playing house and block parties and local clubs, using skills that were novel for Pittsburgh then. That all changed in 1984 when WAMO hired Clifford "Sly Jock" Charlton to do "in the mix" late on Sunday nights bringing rap, later known as hip-hop, to the masses; and,
WHEREAS, WAMO was one of the country's most powerful R&B stations with 72,000 watts reaching 3 states, and by hiring Sly, became the first commercial station to regularly play rap in the Pittsburgh area. Born and raised in the Hill District, and briefly in Los Angeles, he picked up his name "Sly" when he lived in LA and wore a big afro hairstyle and a Davy Crocket jacket like the lead singer for Sly and the Family Stone. Thanks to QAMO he went from little known street DJ to one of the most popular DJs in the city. Moving from one late nighttime slot to more prime time hours, Sly began a career that would last more than two decades at the station as well as the opportunity to hone his acting and comedy skills over the years; and,
