WHEREAS, Citiparks Pittsburgh BIG League Sports is a collaborative effort between Citiparks, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western PA, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Roberta Clemente Foundation ;and,
WHEREAS, BIG League Sports was established in 1994 to create comprehensive recreational programs in order to provide quality athletic and education opportunities in Pittsburgh neighborhoods in addition to providing an avenue for inner city children to experience other neighborhoods and to meet kids from other backgrounds and cultures at no cost to families or communities; and,
WHEREAS, BIG League Sports include baseball, softball, hockey, soccer and special team programs for boys and girls ages 4 through 18 years of age; and,
WHEREAS, one of the most successful programs BIG League Sports sponsors is the "Junior Pirates" instructional program designed for boys and girls ages 4-7 having 20 sites and approximately 1500 kids participating all of whom receive shirts and hats donated by the Pittsburgh Pirates in addition to inviting them to a game each year where they are introduced on the field; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend BIG league Sports and all of its sponsors for the exceptional work they do with children ; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, November 17, 2009, to be "BIG League Sports Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
