WHEREAS, the Amen Corner is a prestigious organization which has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1870 and whose purpose is to engender camaraderie, fraternity and relationships amongst people of all walks of life; and,
WHEREAS, each year, the Amen Corner awards the Fred E. Obley Award which honors the contributions of one of Pittsburgh's most well known and universally respected businessman, Fred E. Obley who served Amen Corner up to his death in 1962, and therefore honors an annual recipient for outstanding business leadership and excellence within the Pittsburgh community; and,
WHEREAS, this year's recipient of the Fred E. Obley Award is Richard V. Piacentini, Executive Director of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for 15 years, who provides leadership to one of the oldest conservatories in North America and whose contribution to the non-profit community of the Pittsburgh region is significant; and,
WHEREAS, Richard Piacentini is past-president of the American Public Gardens Association (APGA), a 500 member association of North American's Gardens and Arboreta. Mr. Piacentini recently received the APGA's Professional Citation; a Shades of Green Leadership Award from the Green Building Alliance; a Carnegie Science Award for his green building accomplishments; a Diamond CEO Award from the Pittsburgh Business Times; and recognition as the Tourism and Travel Advocate of the Year from Visit Pittsburgh.; and,
WHEREAS, Richard Piacentini is a board member of the World Water Center in Washington, DC; chairs the Green buildings and landscapes Committee of the American Public Gardens Association in Wilmington, DE; serves on the Steering Committee for Sustainable Pittsburgh's Champions-4-Sustainability; and is research associate of Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He has also authored a book entitled The Plant Collections Directory for Canada and the United States.
