WHEREAS, Darrin McMillen is the current Owner/Operator of Grandview Bakery and has been named “Neighbor of the Year” by the Mount Washington CDC and Neighbors on the Mount; and,

WHEREAS, Darrin started baking after graduating from Messiah College in 1989. He and his wife Cathi moved to Pittsburgh in 2000 where he worked at Loafer’s Bread Company. In 2006, he helped open Priory Fine Pastries in the East Allegheny neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 2011, Darrin assisted the original owner, Vickie Piesowicz, in opening Grandview Bakery where he worked until 2013. He left retail baking for 8 years until Vickie wanted to sell Grandview Bakery.  Darrin and his wife bought the bakery in September 2019; and,

 

WHEREAS, Darrin did not shut down the bakery during the COVID-19 pandemic which gave hope to the community who supported his efforts. He has hosted meetings and holiday toy drives for Toys for Tots, he volunteers to bake for local community events, and enjoys cookie decorating with the kids during Light Up Night; and,

 

WHEREAS, he has been described by Mt. Washington residents as an “all around good guy” who is always willing to help a neighbor.  He allows community members to store holiday decorations at his shop and employs many locals.  Most recently he hosted a can and metal drive to raise money for the Mt. Washington food bank project; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Darrin McMillen and congratulate him for being named Neighbor of the Year; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Wednesday, June 26, 2024 to be “Darrin McMillen Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
