Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Boys Scouts of America, Greater Pittsburgh Council for its noble and important work in developing the country's next generation of leaders and recognizing the council's achievements with the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Awards Dinner; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, February 8, 2008, to be “BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA , GREATER PITTSBURGH COUNCIL DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS,  the mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law so that they can become responsible, participating citizens ; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Pittsburgh Council is made up of 47,000 members and 10,000 volunteers in the Greater Pittsburgh area ; and,
WHEREAS, each year, the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Pittsburgh Council Scoutreach Committee holds its prestigious Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Awards Dinner held in memory of the U.S. educator and civil rights leader who led the drive for equal opportunity for African - Americans in industry and government during his ten years as head of the National Urban League until his death in 1971; and,
 
WHEREAS, the event which is chaired this year by the Honorable Livingstone M. Johnson and emceed by WTAE Morning News Anchor Andrew Stockey, will highlight the council's accomplishments, objectives and recognize the unsung heroes who have given exceptional service to disadvantaged urban and rural youth  ; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Keynote Address will be delivered this year by Robert M. Higginbotham, M.D., a native of Sewickley , PA, who served during World War II with the all-black 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps known as the Tuskegee Airmen; and,
