Whereas, it is fitting to give this accolade to Deacon George Jones on the 84th Anniversary of New Light Temple Baptist Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, following his Spring 2004 retirement after 16 years of faithful service as chairperson of the Deacon Board; and

Whereas, this being Deacon Jones' 44th year of service as a member of the Deacon Board, ordained in 1960 under pastor Dr. Finis H. Austin, he states, "I may have reigned as chair of the Deacon Board, but I have not resigned from life;" and

Whereas, born on May 23, 1927 in Detroit Michigan, spending his boyhood in Fallowfield Township, Washington County, Deacon Jones came to New Light Temple Baptist Church in 1956 where he was baptized by Reverend N. Mathis; and

Whereas, over the years, Deacon Jones has given his talents selflessly to New Light Temple Baptist Church as assistant superintendent of the church school; church school teacher; trustee; choir director; a melodious voice in the Gospel Chorus and Male Chorus; 1960's coach of a winning, church basketball league; treasurer of the Baptist Training Union of Allegheny Union Baptist Association; and to this country as a member of the U.S. Navy in the post World War II era ; and as a retired, 20-year employee of Sherwin Williams; and

Whereas, although Deacon Jones has been the recipient of many certificates of appreciation and founder of the "New Lighter," the first newsletter of the church, he avows that his two greatest accomplishments are when he gave his life to the Lord and when he married his wife; and

Whereas, it was 1969 when he married the lovely Mary E. Fletcher. They have two sons, Robert Fletcher and James Courtney Fletcher; six grandchildren, Angela, Alicia, Jessica, Robert, Ashley, Erik and Page; and two great grandchildren, Elisa and Cameron.
