WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh office of the National Alzheimer's Association was commissioned in 1988 to serve Southwestern Pennsylvanians affected by Alzheimer's and other dementia related illnesses; and
WHEREAS, in 2001, the Pittsburgh office joined together with several other Alzheimer's Associations across the Commonwealth to form the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association; and
WHEREAS, the Association is a voluntary health organization dedicated to finding preventions, treatments and, eventually, a cure for Alzheimer's and related dementias; and
WHEREAS, the Association's mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research and to enhance quality care and support for individuals, their families and care partners; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter provides a broad array of programs and resources to individuals, families and health professionals in 59 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, serving an estimated 250,000 individuals with Alzheimer's or a related dementia; and
WHEREAS, the Chapter Helpline, 1-800-272-3900, is available, toll-free, 24 hours a day, to Pennsylvania families dealing with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia; and
WHEREAS, last year, the Chapter received 6,542 calls from families dealing with the challenges of every stage of this disease.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby commends and thanks the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association for all its dedicated work for people affected by Alzheimer's and related dementias; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares November 2006 "Alzheimer's Awareness Month" in the City of Pittsburgh.
