Whereas, Officer Stephan James Mayhle lived with his wife and two children in the Brookline neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh; and
Whereas, he dreamed of being of City of Pittsburgh Police Officer since childhood, and pursued criminology studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and;
Whereas, Officer Mayhle realized his dream and was a two year veteran of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police; and
Whereas, at approximately 7:00 AM on the morning of April 4, 2009, Officer Mayhle and his partner, Officer Paul Sciullo, were dispatched to respond to a domestic dispute; and
Whereas, in the course of responding to this call, the officers were fired upon, suffering mortal wounds; and
Whereas, he is survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, and two brothers; and
Whereas, Officer Stephen James Mayhle's actions that day to ensure the safety of the people of the City of Pittsburgh shall stand as a steadfast reminder of the incredible dedication, and sacrifice that our uniformed men and women carry out on a daily basis in service to our City; and
Whereas, the residents of Brookline seek to honor and proclaim the service of Officer Stephen James Mayhle to children and families across the City of Pittsburgh; now
Be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. The Mayor and Director of Public Works are hereby authorized and directed to name the t-ball field located at Brookline Memorial Park "Officer Stephen James Steve Stephen J. Mayhle Memorial Park" effective immediately upon the passage of this resolution.
