WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Brewing Company will celebrate it's 145th Anniversary on Saturday, September 23, 2006; and,
WHEREAS, in 1861, Edward Frauenheim, a young German immigrant, started the Iron City Brewery in the bustling river port known as the "Smoky City", where he began brewing what is now Pittsburgh Brewing Company's flagship - Iron City Beer; and
WHEREAS, within five years, the brewery outgrew its original facilities on 17th Street and moved into its newly built four-story brick building at the corner of Liberty Avenue and 34th Street in Lawrenceville, where Pittsburgh Brewing still operates today; and
WHERAS, the Iron City Brewery continued to expand its markets to become the largest brewery in Pittsburgh. During the latter part of the 19th Century, 21 breweries joined together to make Pittsburgh Brewing Company the largest brewing operation in Pennsylvania, and the third largest in the country; and,
WHEREAS, on September 12, 1995, Pittsburgh native Joseph Piccirilli and his investment group gained ownership of Pittsburgh Brewing Company; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Brewing Company remains dedicated to its employees, its products and the public it serves. It strives to keep a high level of visibility within the community by sponsoring such events as the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank's Blues Festival, Boo and Brew, and its own Oktoberfest, in addition to the countless donations given to local non-profit organizations each year.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commends Pittsburgh Brewing Company for its longevity and extends heartiest congratulations on this milestone anniversary.
